Sonic slowly woke, pain shooting from his body. It took him a minute to remember what happened, but when he did, his eyes widened, in freight for Shadow. He tried to get up, but found himself practically tied down to the bed with bandages. He growled in frustration, not even able to rip them off. A doctor walked in, looking somewhat sad.
“Sonic. It’s good you’re awake. We need you... To help us.” He said, looking at a clip board.
“With what?” Sonic asked, tilting his head to the side a little.
“We... Have a patient, but don’t know who he is. He’s a black hedgehog that looks like you, with red streaks.” He said. Sonic’s eyes widened again.
“Is he ok?!” He practically shouted, worried for Shadow’s life.
“Hopefully. When he came in, he had lost a large amount of blood and had large gashes.” He said somewhat sadly. Sonic almost broke into tears, then and there. If Shadow didn’t live, he wouldn’t know what he’d do.
“H...His name is Sh... Shadow.” Sonic said, holding back the tears.
“Alright. Thank you, Sonic. You should be able to leave tomorrow, too.” The doctor said, walking out of the room.
“Damn Shadow... What happened to you?” Sonic whispered to himself, finally releasing his tears and looking at the ceiling.
--- The beach 2 hours earlier ---
Shadow was now in a depressed state. Sonic had been in the hospital for over a month. He felt like Sonic was going to die, and without Sonic, he would have nothing to live for. Shadow was walking along the beach when he looked in the water and noticed that a piece of the robot still remained there. He shivered, remembering what had happened. He remembered what Sonic looked like in his arms and made a decision. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself any longer, knowing it was his fault the only person that cared about him died. He took the piece of metal out of the water. Shadow observed it for a minute, trying to tell himself it was a bad idea. But, soon enough, He was slowly running the piece of metal down his arm, leaving a large wound. For some reason, it felt good. He didn’t know why though. He smiled and did it again, but to his other arm. Then, he did it to his legs and well... You get the idea. When he finished, he found himself covered in his blood and he enjoyed it. He knew that with the amount of blood he was losing, and the fact he was losing it rapidly, his pain filled life would be gone. He lied in the sand and felt his life slowly slip away.
“It’s.. Finally.. Over.” He said to himself, closing his eyes and never expecting to open them again. He heard someone scream close by, but didn’t move. He couldn’t. He quickly blacked out as he heard an ambulance near.
--- Sonic ---
‘What did he get himself into now? Please.. Let him be alright.. Please.’ Sonic thought. He then remembered Eggman and thought it was his doing. Little did he know that the psychotic genius was dead. Sonic sighed, only thinking of Shadow. Soon though, he fell back to sleep and had a horrible nightmare about Shadow.
--- The next day ---
Sonic woke up again, much better then yesterday. Because he was allowed to leave, he was going to see Shadow. He noticed that his bandages had been removed in his sleep, letting him move. He slid out of the bed, put on his shoes and ran to the main desk. He asked the nurse where Shadow’s room is and she directed him down the hall and to the left. He thanked her and ran into the room, to find a sleeping hedgehog wrapped in bandages. He ran over to the bed and took Shadow’s hand in his, resting his head on the bed’s railing.
“What happened to you?” Sonic asked himself sadly, a tear falling down his cheek and hitting Shadow’s ungloved hand. The doctors threw his gloves out, seeing they didn’t have a use anymore.
Shadow moaned slightly and moved his head, making Sonic’s ears perk up. He put his right hand to his head as a major headache was eating away at his skull.
“Damn it.” He mumbled to himself, not realizing Sonic was next to him, or even holding his hand.
“Shadow.” Sonic whispered under his breath as a large smile came across his muzzle.
“What the hell? Damn. I was supposed to die. Not be in a damn bed.” He said, eyes still closed.
Sonic’s eyes widened and his heart stopped. Shadow.. WANTED to die? What did he do?!
“Sh.. Shadow?” Sonic asked shakily.
Shadow opened his eyes slowly, and was overjoyed to see Sonic with him. He was wrong! Sonic didn’t die! He was confused why Sonic looked confused and scared until he remembered what he had just said.
“You.. Just heard what I said..?” He asked sighing, closing his eyes.
“Yea. What was that about?!” he asked, frightened and annoyed.
“… Nothing.” He said, taking back his hand and putting it under the sheet that rested on top of him.
“Shadow. Please. Tell me.” Sonic pleaded softly, running his hand along on of Shadow’s quills.
“No, Sonic.” He said, turning his head away. He didn’t want t tell Sonic he tried to commit suicide because he thought that Sonic was dead.
Sonic sighed. He really wanted to know what Shadow did, but he knew it’s nearly impossible to make Shadow talk. Especially when he’s being stubborn.
“Do you know when I can get out of here?” Shadow asked, looking at Sonic again. He didn’t feel like sitting in a stupid hospital, just so some cuts could heal up.
“Nah. Probably not for a while.” Sonic sighed, folding his ears back.
“Screw that.” Shadow said sitting up. He was going to go home, whether the people like it or not.
“No, Shadow. You need to stay.” Sonic said pushing him back down gently. He didn’t want Shadow to be even more hurt then he already was.
“No, Sonic. I’m not staying here just for some scratches.” He said, moving Sonic’s had and jumping off the bed. He walked over to a small desk where his shoes were placed under the table, still covered in blood. He put them on and walked over to Sonic with a smile.
“Shadow…” Sonic started pissed off, putting his hands on his hips.
“Oh yea.. You’re going to be angry for me about this, but.. Eggman’s dead.” He mumbled starting for the door.
“Whoa, whoa.. Wait.. What was that?” Sonic asked, raising a brow.
“You heard me. He’s dead.” Shadow said with a smirk, walking out. Sonic was shocked at what he heard. Shadow froze whenever he saw Eggman, and now he’s saying that the killed him! Sonic ran after him, but didn’t see him anywhere. He ran out of the hospital and to the house. “Hey guys!” He said to everyone.
“Sonikku!!” Amy cried, tackling him.
“Sonic! You’re alright!” Knuckles and Rouge said with a smile.
“You had me worried, Sonic!” Tails said.
“Sonic.. Come with me.” Midnight said, walking into the next room. Sonic got out of Amy’s grasp and followed Midnight into the kitchen, curious about what she wanted.
“I know what happened between you and my brother on the beach.” She said, looking straight into his eyes. Sonic froze, afraid she didn’t want him and Shadow to be together and she’d kill him or something.
“Don’t worry. It’s alright. As long as he’s happy.” She said with a smile.
“Is that all you wanted to tell me?” Sonic asked her, relieved she was cool with it.
“No. You’re not going to like this part, though. Do you know why he was in the hospital?” She asked. Sonic only shook his head.
“You were in there for a month. Shadow was very depressed. He had given up on you, thought you were gone. He went back to the beach where he blew up the large robot. He found some scrap, still in the water.” She sighed.
“A..And?” He asked, afraid of what she was going to say.
“Two words. Attempted suicide.” She said coldly. Sonic fell backwards. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Shadow tried to kill himself because he though Sonic died.
“Y..You’re lying.” He said to Midnight.
“No, Sonic. I’m not. He’s in the jungle. You should go find him.” She said, closing her eyes.
“H.. How do you even know all this?” He stammered getting up.
“I can.. See things.” She said, walking back into the main room with everyone. Sonic just stood there, trying to make full sense of what he was told.
‘Shadow. Tried to kill himself.. Because he thought I died. Damn it, Shadow!’ Sonic thought, beginning to race to the jungle. When he got there, he jumped into the trees and began to look for the dark hedgehog. It took him a little while, but he found Shadow sitting on a large branch, just looking in a random direction. Sonic jumped in front of him.
“Don’t you EVER do that again!!” He yelled.
“Do what?” Shadow asked a little confused.
“Never, Shadow. Never try to kill yourself.” He said, putting his hands on Shadow’s shoulder’s and had tears streaming down his muzzle.
Shadow felt guilty. Very guilty. He looked down at the brown branch until he noticed there were spots. He looked up and saw Sonic crying.
“I’m sorry.” He said, folding his ear’s back.
“Sorry wont cut it Shadow. What if it actually worked? Where would I be right now?!” He asked, yelling though he didn’t mean to.
“I’m sorry.” He said again as tears began to glide down his muzzle as well. He felt really bad. ‘What if it did work? Sonic would be alive and I would have killed himself for no reason.’ He felt something wrap around him. He knew Sonic had wrapped his arms around him. Shadow returned the warm embrace, tears still streaming down his face.
“Never do that again.” Sonic whispered, holding onto Shadow for dead life.
“I won’t. I’m so sorry I gave up on you.” He whispered, holding Sonic close as well.
The two stayed like that until Sonic pulled away from Shadow. He looked the dark hedgehog in the eyes and said it one last time.
“Never try to kill yourself.”
“I won’t..” Shadow whispered. Sonic wrapped his arms around Shadow again, but not as long as last time. He moved himself so he was next to Shadow and rested his head on his shoulder. Shadow wrapped an arm around Sonic, running his hand up and down Sonic’s arm.
“I love you, Sonic. I’m sorry.” Shadow said, looking into Sonic’s emerald eyes.
“I love you too, Shadow. It’s alright.” He whispered, returning the gaze.
