Tails was instantly on guard. “Do you think that he came after Sonic and Shadow?”
Knuckles nodded, eyes hardening. “Shall we go give him a surprise?” The red echidna didn’t wait for an answer, already gliding towards where he felt the intruder.
Tails started running after Knuckles. Sonic was his friend too.
Sonic lead Shadow to a peaceful glade, helping the black hedgehog into a stream to wash the… gunk from his quills. Said hedgehog smiled gratefully, fully dunking himself under the cold water to wash away all traces of Robotnik.
After scrubbing with sand for a little while, he got out, sitting on a warm rock next to Sonic.
“Feel better?” The blue hedgehog asked tactfully.
Shadow nodded silently, revelling in the feel of the wind and sun. It was the first time he had ever been able to savour a moment like this.
“Nice isn’t it?” Green eyes shot at him.
“Yeah.” Shadow closed his eyes, raising his face so the sunlight fell on it through a gap in the trees. “So warm…” He murmured delightedly.
It was Sonic’s turn to nod silently. Why did he have the feeling that there was a second meaning to those words? ‘It’s now or never…’ He thought to himself, looking at Shadow’s relaxed form. “How’d I get away from Eggman?”
Shadow stiffened, body tensing and getting ready to flee. “It isn’t important.” He said in a ‘drop it now’ tone of voice.
“It may not be to you, but Eggman is my enemy. He wouldn’t just let me go.”
Shadow smiled ruefully, and turned his face from the sun. “Is it that important to you?”
Sonic nodded with bated breath. Considering the way Shadow was acting, it would no doubt be a major revelation. “I deserve to know.” As soon as the words left his mouth, he knew it was the wrong thing to say.
“Deserve to know?” The black hedgehogs voice was angry. “Someone like you doesn’t ‘deserve to know’.”
“Shadow” Sonic raised his hands placatingly. “Just tell me what happened.”
Shadow shook his head dumbly, fire and energy draining from his person.
The blue hedgehog growled, frustrated by the others resolve. He turned to face Shadow, and, grabbing the black hedgehogs shoulders, spun him round so their eyes could meet. “Tell me Shadow.” Sonic said gently.
Shadow tried to avert his crimson eyes, but Sonic shook him. “Tell me.” The azure hedgehog repeated, nose to nose with Shadow.
Shadow closed his eyes. The blue hero shouldn’t have to live with this, but he couldn’t hold it in. if left, such feelings would fester, be transformed into bitterness and hatred, like before. “For you…” He whispered, eyes still shut. “I would do anything.”
Sonic blinked. What did Shadow mean when he said he would do…? ‘No… no he couldn’t have.’ Sonic’s mind tried desperately to dispel the thoughts, but there was no other alternative. The blue hedgehog blanched, hands relaxing on Shadow’s shoulders, eyes glazing in shock. “You couldn’t have… You wouldn’t…” Sonic muttered. He turned pain stricken eyes to Shadow. “Why?” He breathed.
“Because he would have killed you.” Shadow had opened his eyes, but was gazing into the brook. “The world needs you Sonic.” ‘I need you.’ He thought.
The blue hedgehog was dumbstruck. “But… I let you fall…”
“The world needs you, not some cheap copy. And at least this way I got some freedom for a while.”
Sonic gazed piercingly at Shadow. “You willingly gave up your chance at freedom for me?”
“You would have, and did do so for me.”
Sonic smiled sadly, overcome. His once rival had done so much for him. Who would have thought the two would be so similar? “Thanks.” He murmured, before yawning widely.
“Doo itashimashite.” Shadow replied, lying back on the rock. “Good night.”
“Mm…” Sonic’s eyes closed. “Night Shads…” He laid down next to Shadow , before falling into warm oblivion.
Short I know, but RL is, like I said, evil...
